History
The construction of Aswan Dam threatened the ‘Land Of Gold’ treasures and charms. Most of the ancient Nubia was under the depths of Nile by that point. In the process of recovering and moving these sites and monuments, Nubian Museum was built on a rocky and steep cliff to house the ancient artefacts dating back to prehistoric times to pharaonic times plus Roman and Islam invasions and their impacts.
A design by architect Mahmoud El-Hakim was approved for the project and it did wonder making itself a popular tourist site. The museum was officially opened to the public in 1997.
Architecture
The building covers an area of 7000 m2 of the total Museum, while the rest of 43,000 m2 include a garden and many public spaces. The museum can be divided into 3 sections:
Garden:
The garden with more than 80 historical statues and rocks is the biggest attraction of the museum. Not to mention the artificial lakes, theatre, cave etc. adds their charms and draw tourist to it.
Ground floor:
This part contains the main gate of the museum making it centre of attraction. Apart from that, exhibition halls and reception hall of the museum are where the visitors find the highlights of the museum on display.
First floor:
The most important section of all, where tourist finds information centre which helps to navigate the museum and enjoy all it has to offer. Apart from that, the cultural activities centre and exhibition halls also put their impact strongly.
