History
The old agricultural town when dug for black soil for cotton brought the treasure of Egypt to the forefront. The temples along with other excavated treasures began spreading their Graeco Roman tale.
The Kelsey Museum of Michigan houses more than 45,000 objects from Karanis, but still has not been able to include all.
With the design of an open air museum on the site of Karanis, along with some exhibited pieces and sculptures from other times, a museum was built in 1974.
Supreme Council of Antiquities has re-opened the museum recently to promote international as well as domestic tourism.
Architecture
The building was built in an area of 280mX160m but was expanded with 850mX350m when reopened again. It consists of two floors that exhibit:
- Collections from Prehistoric era – Greco-Roman era
- Collection from Coptic era
- Collection of Islamic era
The ancient site however has:

- 1 temple in south
- Cisterns
- Public Bath
- Houses

Facts
- The highlight of the museum includes a Fayoum Mummy Portrait of a man with English and Arabic labels.
- The magnificent ruins of Karanis are among the best-preserved, and certainly the most easily accessible, of Ptolemaic / Roman town sites.
- The former Graeco Roman town was used as mercenary lodgings that went into decline in 4th and 5th
- However, about 27 different Egyptian, Greek or Roman deities recorded at the town and among them is God Sobek, Amon, Serapes, Zeus, etc.
- Crocodiles are revered in the holy lakes and mummies of crocodiles tell how much they mean to the people.
- The 2 temples of Karanis are actually Altars where offerings were made for Gods.
- A collection of artefacts includes ostracas, jars, glass vases, and coins, number of Papyrus written in Greek etc. was recently found.
