General Info

History

The palace was built on Abdin Bey, a small mansion which belonged to an Ottoman Turkish nobleman. Khedive Ismail Pasha started the construction on 1863 which took nearly 10 years to complete. It became Government seat and main residence for royals in 1872. However, the place was inaugurated in 1974 making it official.

In 1980s, President Hosni Mubarak started the restoration process of the palace only to be interrupted by earthquake. The museum was finally restored and established in December 2004 as museum for historical documents.

Architecture

The palace has 500 suites decorated with adornments, paintings, and clocks scattered in the parlors and wings, most of which are decorated with pure gold.

The palace has 2 stories, out of which:

Upper floors are reserved for foreign dignitaries for their visiting stays.

Lower floors are totally held as Museum. Museums room are divided into 5 sections such as:

• Silver museum
• Royal Family museum
• Presidential Gifts museum
• Arms museum which contains
• Historical Documents museum which contains
• Collection of knives, guns and cannons
• Ancient weapons
• Exhibit of medals
• Order of merits and so on..
• Imperial Ottoman firman that established Muhammad Ali and his family rule
• A certificate for the Order of the Iron Crown, from the short-lived South American Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia.

Facts

• The palace was designed by French architect Rousseau but was decorated by Egyptian, Italian, French and Turkish decorators.
• A garden was added in 1921 on an area of 20 feddans.
• The cost of the building reached 700,000 EGP with furnishing costing 2,000,000 EGP.
• The cost of later altercation, preservation and restoration not included yet.
• The palace was used for official events and ceremonies too.
