Egypt is one of those rare destinations that can be visited year-round, but when you go makes an enormous difference to your experience. The difference between visiting in November and visiting in July, for example, is a difference of nearly 20°C and thousands of fellow tourists at every temple entrance.
At Nile Holiday, we have been guiding travelers through Egypt for over 25 years. Every month, we see what works and what does not. This guide shares everything we know about timing your visit, so you can plan the trip of a lifetime with complete confidence.
| Quick answer: When is the best time to visit Egypt?• October, November, and February are the single best months, mild weather, manageable crowds.• December and January are also excellent if you do not mind peak-season prices.• March and April offer good conditions with slightly fewer tourists.• May to September is hot (up to 41°C) , suitable for Nile cruises with air-conditioned cabins. |
Understanding Egypt’s Climate
Egypt essentially has two seasons: a warm winter (October to April) and a very hot summer (May to September). The country is almost entirely desert, meaning rainfall is negligible year-round, less than 25mm annually in most regions. What changes dramatically is temperature, UV intensity, and the number of visitors.
The Nile Valley where most of Egypt’s ancient sites sit, experiences more extreme heat than the coastal regions. Luxor and Aswan are significantly hotter than Cairo, and Cairo is hotter than Alexandria. If you are planning a Nile cruise or temple tour, factor in that you will be spending several hours outdoors each day.

Month-by-Month Breakdown
January — Cold Nights, Perfect Days
Temperature: 15–22°C (59–72°F) | Crowd level: Very high (peak season)
January is one of the most popular months to visit Egypt, and for good reason. The days are pleasantly warm, ideal for long hours at Karnak Temple or the Valley of the Kings while evenings can be genuinely cool, especially in Upper Egypt. Pack a light jacket for Nile cruises after sunset.
The downside of January is the crowds. European and American winter holidays push visitor numbers to their yearly peak. Book your Nile cruise and Luxor hotel at least three to four months in advance. Prices reflect the high demand.
•Best for: First-time visitors, families, anyone who wants guaranteed good weather
• Book in advance: All Nile cruises sell out months ahead in January
•Pack: Light layers warm afternoons, cool evenings
February — Our Favourite Month
Temperature: 17–24°C (63–75°F) | Crowd level: High but easing mid-month
February is arguably the single best month to visit Egypt, and it is the month our own guides most enjoy working. The weather is close to perfect — warm enough for comfortable sightseeing in a t-shirt, cool enough that you never feel overwhelmed by the heat. Crowds thin noticeably after the first week, once Christmas and New Year holiday makers have returned home.
February is also ideal for a Nile cruise. The river is calm, the light over the temples is extraordinary in winter, and you are not competing with summer heat on the deck.
• Best for: Couples, photographers, anyone who wants good weather with slightly fewer crowds
• Valentine’s Day special: Consider our Dahabiya sailboat cruise for a romantic February trip
March — Spring Arrives, Winds Pick Up
Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F) | Crowd level: Moderate
March is a transitional month. The weather is still pleasant and temperatures are ideal, but you may encounter khamsin, dry, sandy winds that blow in from the desert, sometimes reducing visibility and coating everything in fine dust. These episodes are short-lived (usually one to three days) and unpredictable, but worth knowing about if you are planning photography or outdoor activities.
The upside of March is excellent value: prices have come down from January peak levels, yet the weather is still excellent. Easter falls in March some years, which brings a brief spike in European visitors.
• Watch for: Khamsin sandstorms, usually brief but can disrupt outdoor plans
• Best for: Budget-conscious travellers who still want good weather
April — Warm and Increasingly Quiet
Temperature: 24–32°C (75–90°F) | Crowd level: Low to moderate
April is an underrated month for visiting Egypt. The crowds have thinned substantially, prices are reasonable, and the weather, while warming up is still manageable for most travelers. Early April mornings at the temples are wonderfully peaceful, with far fewer tour groups than you would encounter in January or February.
By late April, the heat in Luxor and Aswan begins to feel intense between midday and 3pm. Structure your day accordingly: visit sites early morning (7–10am) and late afternoon (4–6pm), and rest during the hottest hours.
• Best for: Independent travelers, those on a moderate budget, anyone who prefers fewer crowds
• Tip: Start your temple visits at 7am sharp, the light and the quiet are extraordinary
May — The Heat Arrives
Temperature: 28–37°C (82–99°F) | Crowd level: Low
May marks the beginning of Egypt’s hot season. Temperatures climb sharply, and sightseeing in the middle of the day becomes genuinely uncomfortable. That said, May is one of the least crowded months of the year, if you can handle the heat, you will have many sites almost entirely to yourself.
A Nile cruise is particularly well-suited to May. Modern cruise ships are fully air-conditioned, and you can structure your shore excursions around the cooler morning and evening hours. The Nile itself is beautiful in the warm light of a May afternoon.
•Best for: Travelers on tight budgets, those who prefer solitude at sites
•Essential: High-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+), a wide-brimmed hat, and a refillable water bottle
June, July & August — Peak Heat
Temperature: 32–41°C (90–106°F) | Crowd level: Very low
These are the hottest months in Egypt. Temperatures in Luxor and Aswan regularly exceed 40°C, and outdoor activities between 10am and 5pm are genuinely exhausting and potentially dangerous without proper preparation. This is the quietest period of the year for tourism.
We still run tours in summer, and many of our guests have had wonderful experiences but we are honest with everyone who asks: it requires careful planning. The advantage is significant: prices are at their lowest, sites are virtually empty, and the Nile cruise experience is unmatched. On the water, with air conditioning and a cold drink, a summer Nile cruise has its own particular magic.
| Planning a summer visit? Here is our advice:• Book a Nile cruise, air-conditioned cabins and cooler river breezes make it manageable• Visit all outdoor sites before 9am or after 5pm only• Stay in hotels with strong air conditioning and a pool• Drink at least 3–4 litres of water per day• Wear loose, light-coloured, breathable clothing• Consider a private car with driver for all transfers |
September — The Heat Breaks
Temperature: 28–36°C (82–97°F) | Crowd level: Low to moderate
September is a month of transition. The worst of the summer heat begins to ease, particularly in the second half of the month and the first European travelers of the autumn season start to arrive. Prices are still low, and you will find many sites refreshingly uncrowded.
By late September, conditions in Cairo and Alexandria are genuinely pleasant. Luxor and Aswan are still warm but much more manageable than July or August. A late-September visit can offer the best of both worlds: off-season prices with improving weather.
•Best for: Adventurous travelers comfortable with warmth, those seeking best value
•Ramadan note: Check dates if Ramadan falls in September, some restaurants have limited daytime hours
October — The Sweet Spot Returns
Temperature: 24–30°C (75–86°F) | Crowd level: Moderate and rising
October is one of the best months to visit Egypt. The heat has dropped to comfortable levels, the skies are brilliantly clear, and the new tourist season is just beginning. You get excellent weather without the intense January crowds. Nile cruise bookings start filling up, reserve two to three months ahead for October travel.
October is also one of the most photogenic months in Egypt. The low angle of the autumn sun creates extraordinary golden light over the temples in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
•Best for: Photographers, families, repeat visitors who know to book ahead
•Nile cruise tip: Book by July for October travel
November — Our Top Recommendation
Temperature: 18–26°C (64–79°F) | Crowd level: High but not overwhelming
If we had to pick a single best month for most travelers, November would be our answer. The temperatures are perfect, warm and sunny without being hot. The crowds are significant but not overwhelming. Prices have not yet reached their December and January peaks. And the quality of light, with the sun lower in the sky, makes every temple and every photograph extraordinary.
November is our busiest month at Nile Holiday, which tells its own story. The combination of ideal weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices makes it the month that experienced Egypt travelers return to again and again.
• Best for: Almost everyone first-timers and repeat visitors alike
•Book early: November cruises fill up quickly, we recommend booking 4–6 months ahead
December — Festive and Beautiful
Temperature: 14–22°C (57–72°F) | Crowd level: Peak (especially Christmas week)
December is a wonderful time to visit Egypt. The weather is crisp and clear, and the combination of ancient temples and festive atmosphere creates something genuinely memorable. Christmas week and New Year bring the highest visitor numbers and the highest prices of the year, but many people find the atmosphere during this period particularly special.
Evenings in December can be quite cold by Egyptian standards, especially on the Nile at night. Bring a proper jacket for evening walks and Nile cruise dinners on deck.
•Best for: Those combining Egypt with a special occasion, Christmas, anniversary, honeymoon
• Pack: A warm layer for evenings, it can drop to 12°C in Upper Egypt at night
• Budget: Expect premium prices throughout December, especially 20 Dec–3 Jan
Special Considerations When Planning Your Visit
Ramadan
Ramadan is the Islamic holy month of fasting, and its timing shifts by approximately 10 days each year. During Ramadan, some restaurants operate reduced hours in the daytime, and the atmosphere across Egypt is notably different, more reflective, with spectacular evening celebrations (Iftar) at sunset. Many travelers find Ramadan Egypt uniquely atmospheric. Others prefer to visit outside this period. Check the dates for your travel year and plan accordingly.
Egypt’s National Holidays
Egyptian national holidays including Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha can be particularly busy at popular sites. Domestic tourism increases significantly during these periods. Our team tracks all holiday dates and can advise you on the best days to visit specific sites during your stay.
Best Month for Specific Interests
