How Many Days Do You Need in Egypt?

Complete Itinerary Guide: 5, 7, 10 & 14-Day Plans for 2026

Planning a trip to Egypt and wondering how many days you actually need? The honest answer is: it depends entirely on which sites you want to see. Egypt is one of the world’s largest countries with thousands of years of history spread across thousands of kilometres. You could spend a month here and still leave with a list of things you missed.

That said, most travellers visit Egypt for between 7 and 10 days, and that is enough time to see the very best of the country comfortably. In this guide, we break down exactly what you can fit into 5, 7, 10, and 14 days, with day-by-day itineraries you can use as a starting point.

Quick answer: How many days in Egypt?• 5 days — Cairo + one Nile city (Luxor or Aswan). Good for first-timers on a tight schedule.•
7 days — Cairo + Luxor + Aswan. The most popular choice. Covers all the highlights.
10 days — Cairo + full Nile cruise + Abu Simbel. Our most recommended itinerary.
14 days — Everything above + Red Sea, Alexandria, or the desert oases.

5 Days in Egypt — The Essential Highlights

Five days is the minimum we recommend for a meaningful Egypt experience. You will not see everything, but you will see enough to fall in love with the country and start planning your return trip. This itinerary focuses on Cairo and Luxor, which together contain the greatest concentration of ancient sites in the world.

5-Day Itinerary: Cairo & Luxor

DayWhat to do
Day 1Arrive Cairo. Check in, rest, evening walk in Khan el-Khalili market.
Day 2Giza Pyramids & Sphinx in the morning. Egyptian Museum or Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.
Day 3Fly or train to Luxor. Check in. Luxor Temple at sunset — one of Egypt’s most beautiful experiences.
Day 4West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon. Afternoon rest.
Day 5East Bank: Karnak Temple complex in the morning. Fly home from Luxor in the afternoon.

• Best for: First-time visitors, business travellers, anyone with limited annual leave.

• What you miss: Aswan, Abu Simbel, Nile cruise, Red Sea. Plan a return trip to see these.

• Nile Holiday tip: Even on a 5-day trip, we recommend a private guide for all site visits. The stories behind the tombs and temples transform the experience completely.

Seven days is the most popular Egypt itinerary, and it is popular for good reason. In a week, you can comfortably cover Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan — the three cities that together hold the vast majority of Egypt’s ancient monuments. This is the itinerary we recommend most often to first-time visitors.

With 7 days, you have two options: a land-based tour with hotels in each city, or a combination of land and a short Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. The Nile cruise option is our personal recommendation; it adds a completely different dimension to the journey and is often the highlight guests remember most.

7-Day Itinerary: Cairo, Luxor & Aswan

DayWhat to do
Day 1Arrive Cairo. Transfer to hotel. Rest and recover from travel.
Day 2Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, and Solar Boat Museum. Afternoon: Saqqara Step Pyramid.
Day 3Cairo: Grand Egyptian Museum (the new home of Tutankhamun’s treasures). Evening flight to Luxor.
Day 4Luxor East Bank: Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. Board your Nile cruise ship if taking cruise option.
Day 5Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple. Cruise sails toward Esna and Edfu.
Day 6Edfu Temple (Horus) and Kom Ombo Temple (Sobek). Cruise arrives Aswan.
Day 7Aswan: Philae Temple, Aswan High Dam, Nubian village. Fly home from Aswan.

•Best for: Most travellers — this itinerary hits every major highlight without feeling rushed.

Upgrade option: Add a day trip to Abu Simbel from Aswan, only 3 hours by road and absolutely unmissable.

•Nile Holiday tip: Book the cruise option for days 4–7 if possible. Sleeping on the Nile as you sail between temples is an experience unlike any other.

Ten days is what we consider the ideal Egypt trip. You have enough time to see everything important without ever feeling rushed, and you can add the experiences that are genuinely life-changing, most notably, Abu Simbel and a full 7-night Nile cruise.

With 10 days, you also have breathing room. If you fall in love with the Valley of the Kings and want an extra hour, you can take it. If you want to spend a lazy afternoon watching the Nile from your cruise deck, there is time. The best travel memories are usually made in the unscheduled moments.

10-Day Itinerary: The Complete Egypt Experience

DayWhat to do
Day 1Arrive Cairo. Transfer to hotel. Evening orientation walk.
Day 2Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, and Solar Boat Museum. Afternoon at leisure in Cairo.
Day 3Grand Egyptian Museum (full day — Tutankhamun collection alone takes 2 hours). Evening: Old Cairo and Coptic quarter.
Day 4Morning flight to Aswan. Afternoon: Philae Temple and felucca ride on the Nile.
Day 5Early morning excursion to Abu Simbel (depart 4am, return by noon). Afternoon: Nubian village. Board cruise.
Day 6Cruise: Kom Ombo Temple and Edfu Temple (Horus). Sail north.
Day 7Arrive Luxor. West Bank: Valley of the Kings (including KV62, Tutankhamun’s tomb) and Hatshepsut Temple.
Day 8Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Queens and Medinet Habu Temple. Afternoon at leisure in Luxor.
Day 9Luxor East Bank: Karnak Temple complex (a full morning). Luxor Museum in the afternoon.
Day 10Morning at leisure in Luxor. Afternoon flight home via Cairo.
  • Best for: Anyone who wants to truly experience Egypt rather than just tick off the highlights.
  • What makes this special: Abu Simbel, a full Nile cruise, AND enough time to explore Luxor’s lesser-visited temples.
  • Nile Holiday tip: Days 4–9 work perfectly as a fully guided private tour with Nile Holiday. We handle every transfer, ticket, and guide so you never have to think about logistics.

14 Days in Egypt — The Full Journey

Two weeks in Egypt is the dream trip. With 14 days you can add experiences that most visitors never reach: the Red Sea coast for snorkelling and diving, the ancient city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean, or the surreal landscape of the White Desert. These additions transform a great Egypt holiday into an unforgettable one.

14-Day Itinerary: Egypt & Beyond

DayWhat to do
Day 1–2Cairo: arrival, Giza Pyramids, Grand Egyptian Museum.
Day 3Day trip to Alexandria: Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the old library, Fort Qaitbey. Return to Cairo.

• Alternative 14-day option: Replace the Red Sea with a White Desert safari from Cairo — truly otherworldly landscapes.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Egypt Itinerary

Do not underestimate travel time

Egypt is a large country. Cairo to Luxor is 700km. Many travellers plan their first trip assuming they can easily drive between cities, but most journeys are done by domestic flight (1 hour) or overnight train (9 hours). Factor this into your day count. We always include all transfers in our tour planning.

Always add one buffer day

Whatever itinerary you choose, we recommend adding one day of buffer if you can. Flights in Egypt run late. You might discover a site you want to linger in. That extra day removes all stress and often becomes the best day of the trip.

Start with Aswan, end in Luxor — not the other way round

If you are taking a Nile cruise, always start in Aswan and cruise north to Luxor. The traditional route runs this direction, and it means your final day is spent in Luxor, the city with the easiest onward flight connections to Cairo and then home. Going the wrong direction creates unnecessary backtracking.

Private tours vs. group tours

At Nile Holiday, all our tours are private. This means your guide and vehicle are exclusively yours, you set the pace, stop when you want, and never wait for a group of 40 other tourists. For families with children or anyone who values flexibility, private tours make an enormous difference to the experience.
