Abu Simbel Sun Festival 22 Feb. 22 Oct.
Experience one of the most extraordinary events in Egypt — the magical alignment of sunlight inside the legendary temples of Abu Simbel Temples during the famous Sun Festival of Ramesses II.
Your journey begins at midnight when our representative will pick you up from your hotel in Aswan for a comfortable transfer to Abu Simbel. Upon arrival before sunrise, you will witness the remarkable phenomenon that occurs only twice each year.
The great temple of Ramesses II was built to honor the deified pharaoh himself and the gods Amun‑Ra, Ra‑Horakhty, and Ptah. With astonishing architectural precision, the temple was designed so that the rays of the rising sun penetrate the temple’s entrance and travel through the inner Hypostyle Hall, eventually illuminating the statues in the sanctuary.
On two specific dates each year — 21 February (the anniversary of Ramesses II’s coronation) and 21 October (believed to be his birthday) — sunlight reaches deep inside the temple to illuminate the statues of Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, and Ramesses II himself, while the statue of Ptah, the god associated with darkness, remains in shadow. This breathtaking spectacle has become known as the Abu Simbel Sun Festival.
Visitors gather inside the temple before sunrise to witness the gradual movement of light through the rock-cut halls — a truly unforgettable moment where ancient engineering meets natural wonder.
Interestingly, the temples were relocated in 1972 during an international UNESCO rescue project to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Because of this relocation, the solar alignment now occurs one day later than originally intended, yet the experience remains just as magnificent.
After the sunrise event, you will have time to explore the temples at your leisure, including the Great Sun Temple of Ramesses II and the beautiful Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Queen Nefertari. You can also enjoy colorful performances by Nubian and Egyptian folklore groups and capture memorable photographs of this remarkable site.
After completing your visit, you will be comfortably transferred back to your hotel in Aswan.
