The former palace of Princess Fatma Al-Zahra’ is converted into a museum called Royal Jewellery Museum that houses invaluable collection of jewels and jewellery of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty with 19th-century paintings, statues, and decorative arts for display.

History

A palace was built during 1919 and 1923 for Princess Fatema El Zahraa, the daughter of Prince Haidar Fadel who was the son of Khedive Ismail’s brother Prince Mustafa Fadel.

After Egypt revolution in 1952, the palace lost its ownership and become a presidential lounge.

It was inaugurated as museum in October 1986 first but went under restorations and expansions for 5 years and reopened in April 2010.

Architecture

One of the largest museums in Egypt represents European architectural art has mainly 2 large suites:

Eastern suite has 2 halls and a gallery with a bronze statue of a boy at the centre.

The western suite has 2 floors which consist of 4 large halls and 3 bathrooms which are coated with ceramics in each floor. An eye-pleasing Foyer connecting these suites.

After renovations, additional facilities were added with addition to security alarm system and surveillance cameras. These additions include:

  • Central air conditioning,
  • Library,
  • Café,
  • Seminar hall,
  • Restoration laboratory

Facts

Some jewellery dates back to the ruling period of Said Pasha. That includes

  • Some golden clocks and watches,
  • Turkish, Egyptian, and European insignias decorated with gold and diamonds, and
  • 4000 Roman, Persian, Byzantine, and Coptic coins.

The portraits of royal families were pure gold frames.

Among these collections, King Farouq’s collection is featured with diamonds. Such as:

  • his personal stick of ebony and gold and
  • Magnificent set of cups with gold (each with 229 pieces of sapphire and 29 pieces of diamonds)
  • And so on..
