President Hosni Mubarak started the idea of Grand Egyptian Museum in 2002. Many statues and artefacts were moved here and finances were secured for the project. But, the constructions finally begin in March 2012.

For the architect plans, a competition was held which Heneghan Peng from Dublin, an architectural firm won fair and square with its modern designs.

The official opening was held in 2018 and about $795 million was believed to be the estimated cost.

The building is shaped like a sloping triangle and is located to be exactly two kilometres west of the pyramids. Hence, the walls sides with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure.

The museum is a show in itself. Most prominent features are:

  • The plaza in the front is filled with date plants.

  • The see-through stone wall which makes up the frontal face is made of alabaster.

  • Main entrance is a large foyer that showcases the large statues that has been brought from many corners of Egypt.

  • The museum is designed to include virtual reality with many modern technologies.

  • The designers have added children's museum, conference centre, training centre, and workshops to make the whole project more appealing and intriguing.

  • The credit for this wonderful show house goes to Heneghan Peng Architects, Buro Happold and Arup.

  • About 5000 designs were drawn before a design plan for Grand Egyptian Museum was approved and construction could begin.

  • Many statues were moved, such as Statue of Ramesses II and last of King Tut's chariots were moved to GEM.

  • A full tomb collection of King Tutankhamun that includes about 5000 items in total is the main attraction of the museum.

  • Other artefacts and showpieces from Luxor, Minya, Sohag, Assiut, Beni Suef, Fayoum, the Delta, and Alexandria were also brought to add to the charm of this new museum.
